- What is steel mesh?
The mesh is made of steel rods welded together to make a sheet. The rebar is placed to form square or rectangular gaps. Before you say shape doesn’t matter, it actually does. Rectangular sheets are used for wall slabs and squares, the most common, are used in flooring.
- Why do trades need it?
Concrete mix is strong when it hardens, but it needs the extra tensile strength that only rebar can provide. Steel mesh has grooves the concrete ‘clings’ to. It’s an extra measure to prevent cracks in the slab that occur thanks to wear and tear.
- How is it used in other industries besides construction?
For almost everything. Steel mesh, and the rebar itself, is very versatile. Artist Ai Weiwei created an installation made from rebar. The materials were taken from the sites affected by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The bent rods were straightened and laid in a single room, creating an eerie, rusted landscape. About 150 tonnes of rods were used.
Horticulturists use steel mesh for various purposes, but a common one is to give support to climbing plants. It’s easier for gardeners to tend to their climbing plants and hanging garden boxes when they’re in an isolated area.
